Cydcor takes its responsibility as a contributing member of the society very seriously and undertakes a series of corporate social responsibility projects that are aimed at improving the living conditions of people affected by natural disasters. Its recent philanthropic efforts to aid in the rescue and recovery efforts for the earthquake victims in Haiti have been widely appreciated by the media and various relief organizations.

The Cydcor offices that are based in Haiti itself were most proactive in the fund raising activities for this relief project. Their relentless effort to mobilize financial as well as material support from within the organization as well as outside it – namely its business associates and clients proved fruitful. Cydcor finally raised twenty five boxes worth of essential items for the earthquake victims in Haiti and is still continuing its effort to lend a helping hand to those affected by this natural disaster.

In addition to contributing to various humanitarian causes that are championed by local social organizations, Cydcor is actively involved in arranging for better provisions for the soldiers. The company feels a strong sense of duty towards these brave soldiers who are stationed miles away from their homes and families in the service of the United States of America.

Just a few months back, Cydcor donated 27 gift boxes to the US soldiers through a philanthropy group called Any Soldier. This group focuses on making arrangements for US soldiers stationed across the world to receive packages and letters from home. The gift boxes contained various items such as newspapers, magazines, packaged food items, basic toiletries and letters from friends and families. This noble gesture enjoyed positive reception from not only the armed forces but also from the global community of nations that hold the cause of these hard working men and women close to its heart.

Yet another community program for which Cydcor has received accolades from various sections of the society is its Cydcor Cares Program that aims to encourage the habit of reading among kids. Its ‘Reading Fair’ has already toured several kindergartens and schools in California where Cydcor team members read out to kids while being dressed as their favorite fictional characters.

There is no justification for a 4T Ralph Lauren skirt to cost that same as an adult skirt. The one exception is at Macys, which has great deals on children’s clothing during their major sale events.

Apparently, the best store to bargain shop for girls is at Target. You have a lot of option and the clothes are well constructed with most items in the $10-$17 range. Plus shopping at target is very acceptable (unlike K-MART), so you can save money without worry about the “cool” factor.

It seems like the designers for boys clothing are the hero on making them look like little action heroes. Bargain shopping for these tykes is an art form that few know how to do. Target has great stuff for little guys, with Children’s Place giving the most for your bucks. However, SEARS is also a great place to find cute little items from designers like Sean John and Levi, for very reasonable prices.

Although Old Navy is great place for basics like Cargo pants, the really cool stuff is at GAP. Bright colored lumberjack jackets and knit caps will keep your little guy looking stylish. Another good place is Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx. Usually both these stores have nice suits from designers like Polo Ralph Lauren for such a bargain that you could also pick them up a little toy to make up for forcing them to go shopping.

Further signs of a shift in the market include both Morrisons and Tesco selling energy efficient light bulbs at low prices, while Asda, the Co-op and Somerfield greatly increased the proportion of in-season vegetables produced in the UK.

Larry Whitty, chairman of the NCC, said: “The food we eat is responsible for one-third of our impact on climate change. NCC’s research has spotted important signs of progress right across the market … but much remains to be done if supermarkets are to become truly green grocers.”

Meanwhile, separate research being published today by the Climate Group reveals poor consumer awareness of companies taking the lead on climate change. The research shows that two-thirds of people were unable to name any brands that are taking a lead, but said 80% of consumers were making some effort to be green.

It’s like in any relationship, it’s a promise made by both sides. In business term, it’s an approach in finance. When they need something today, they promise to pay for it at some point in the future. And those promises are called bonds.

There are millions and millions of bonds issued every year. And the bond market in its entirety is staggeringly large. The total value of all outstanding bonds in the global market is approximately $61 trillion, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. By comparison, the total value of shares of stock in the global markets is about $50 trillion.

Types of available bonds – from Treasury Notes and TIPS to Cat bonds and Bowie Bonds. There are the reasonably safe bonds that are called “investment grade.” Then there are the riskier bonds called “below investment grade,” “high yield,” and — most tellingly — “junk bonds.”

To make matters even more confusing, bonds of all types are sometimes referred to by different names. Sometimes bonds are called fixed-income securities. Sometimes they are called debt securities.

There’s a “primary market,” which is where bonds are sold for the first time. Then there’s the “secondary market,” an often confusing and hidden part of Wall Street where bonds can be traded.

But no matter what you call them and no matter where you buy them, nearly all bonds share some common traits:

1.  Face Value – When a bond is created it is given a certain face value, sometimes called the par value or the principal of the bond. Just as in a personal loan, the principal refers to the amount of money the borrower must return to the lender at the end of the loan term. By tradition, bonds in the U.S. are almost always given a face value of $1,000. Thus a bond issue of $100 million, in which a corporation is looking to borrow $100 million from investors, will involve the sale of 100,000 bonds with face values of $1,000 each.

2.  Interest rate – Nearly all bonds pay an interest rate (The exceptions are zero-coupon bonds and “strips.”) Those rates tend to have an easily understood relationship to risk. The more likely it is that a bond issuer will default on a loan, the higher the interest rate he must pay to attract investors. Interest rates are calculated as a percentage of the bond’s face value. And by tradition, interest payments are made on bonds twice a year. The annual interest rate on a bond is called the yield.

3.  Maturity Dates – Bonds don’t live forever. Each of them has an expiration date, or maturity, at which time the bond issuer must return the principal to an investor. Some bonds have a very short life span. Others last for decades. As a rule of thumb, bonds that mature in less than five years are called short bonds. Those that mature in five to 12 years are called intermediate bonds. Long bonds have maturities of 12 years or more.

4.  Credit Agency Rating – How safe is your bond? How likely is it that the issuer will collapse and default on the loan? Will the issuer have enough cash flow eight years from now to make interest payments? These are complex questions that require considerable time and study to answer. Fortunately, you don’t have to do the work. There’s an entire industry dedicated to determining the safety of bonds and sharing that information with brokers and investors.

These credit rating agencies – Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s (S&P), Fitch Ratings, A.M. Best, and others – assign letter grades to bonds. With a glance you can tell that a bond with an A rating from Moody’s is considered much safer than a bond with a CC rating from Fitch. However, it’s worth noting that the collapse of the mortgage-backed securities market in 2007-08 showed that even the experts at the credit agencies found it difficult to analyze some of the complex bonds and derivatives that Wall Street created during the housing boom.

By learning to understand and compare these common factors, you’ll be able to navigate through the complex world of fixed-income investing and determine which bonds work best for your portfolio.

Treasuries are backed by “the full faith and credit” of the U.S. government. The risk of default on these fixed-income securities is NIL. Not even the safest corporate bond in the world can make that claim. If you’re primary goal is to not lose money, treasuries are for you. When you buy a Treasury Bill, Bond or Note you’ll get your interest payments and you’ll get your principal back.

They are not a risk-free. There are, in fact, two very clear risks to holding Treasuries.

Inflation risk.

If inflation rises, the value of your investment may decline. Consider, for example, that you own a Treasury bond that pays interest of 3.32 percent. If the rate of inflation rises to, say, 4 percent, your investment is not “keeping up with inflation.” Or to put it another way, the value of the money you invested in the bond is declining. You’ll get your principal back when the bond matures, but it will be worth less.

Interest rate risk.

Remember, bond prices have an inverse relationship to interest rates. When one rises, the other falls.

If you have to sell a Treasury before it matures, the price you can fetch will be based on the interest rate environment at the time of the sale. In other words, if rates have risen since you “locked in” your return, the price of the security will fall.

There’s a third factor that can be considered a risk, but it’s a bit of a stretch. Nonetheless, it’s worth discussing.

Treasuries are so safe that they don’t have to pay much to attract investors. As a result, the yields on treasuries often fall far short of the yields on even very safe, AAA-rated corporate debt. That doesn’t cost you money, but it could cost you the opportunity for money.

In finance, opportunity cost refers to the difference between what you earn on an investment and what you could have earned if you had invested in something else. The opportunity cost of keeping more than small amounts of cash in a savings account, for example, is generally considered too high for nearly all investors.

Treasuries aren’t quite a savings account. But they don’t pay much interest. And if you invest in treasuries, you almost always could have made more money someplace else. Thus the biggest risk for treasuries investors may be that in being too afraid of risk, they invested too heavily in treasuries.

All policies would pay a fixed amount that was determined at the outset when you took out the policy after a period of waiting. They would cover against the fact that you might suffer illness for a period of time or you might not be able to work after being involved in any accident. The policy can also protect against the fact that you might be made redundant and have to find a new position.

One form of policy covers one of your largest outgoings each month, your mortgage repayment by way of taking out mortgage payment protection insurance. Failing to be able to maintain you mortgage would mean that the lender has the right to take you to court and seek a repossession order. If the judge issues this, it would mean that you would have to leave your home.

In the majority of cases you would be evicted in around 28 days of the hearing and along with losing your home would face the stigma of repossession and the repercussions. Your credit rating for one would be affected and this could mean the chances of borrowing in the future would be very slim. A policy would give you an income which would allow you to carry on paying your mortgage repayments.

If you have loans or borrowings on credit cards then again you would have to be able to keep up with the repayments. Failure to maintain them would see you getting into debt. Your lender could choose to take you to court and you could be handed a County Court Judgment. A judge can also send bailiffs to your home to recover what is owed through your belongings. At the very least your credit score would be affected and this is harder to repair than it is to destroy. A loan payment protection policy can be taken and this would allow you peace of mind that you had the money to repay your commitments if you became unemployed or were incapacitated.

You can also choose to protect your income in general by way of an income payment protection policy. This would allow you to maintain all of your outgoings including the big ones such as your mortgage, loan or credit card repayments. However it provides much more as you would have help for all of your outgoings and would not have to start ducking and diving to avoid bills or juggling them around.

Policies begin to provide with providers at different times. Some payout from the 30th day while with others it is the 90th day, provider offer payment protection policies that could pay for 12 months, with others it can be 24 monthly payments you would receive. Ethical providers should offer the information on how long and when the cover pays before you buy your policy. They should also make you aware of any exclusions which could be found and that you have checked them against your circumstances.

No Personal Involvement

First, Trump doesn’t get personally involved. He knows how to protect his personal finances. In both instances, Trump’s corporations have filed for bankruptcy; but not personally. Therefore, when his casino fell into about a billion dollars in debt. Trump only made the decision to do so once he had spoken to his banks and bondholders.

But, by filing, he gave his business the opportunity to regroup and reduce his business debt. It didn’t hurt however that it would also reduce his personal debt, as Trump is likely the one every creditor would look to if the Taj Mahal couldn’t pay up. So, in fact, Trump avoided potential lawsuits from credits and he may have also avoided personal bankruptcy by keeping his own bank account insulated.

Trump, it appeared, had triumphed. His company had dire financial problems but seemed to rise just as quickly from those bankruptcy ashes. Just three years later, he combined the hotels into the publicly held Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts.

Yet, Trump’s public company would eventually fall…again. Within a few years of soaring high prices, the company stock had fallen into single digits. The one-time powerhouse company remained profitless and struggled just to pay the interest on the $2 billion debt. Trump claimed that the properties were unable to make the improvements necessary for keeping up with its flashier competitors. These financial troubles led to Trump’s second trip into bankruptcy.

Win-Win Business Deals

It’s in this second bankruptcy that Trump demonstrated the other quality that helps him stay on top. He knows how to create a win-win situation. Donald Trump filed for Chapter 11 a second time. Again, Trump asked to be able to restructure his company’s debt and overhaul its aging casinos. Under the voluntary bankruptcy filing, Trump Atlantic City Associates, which is 99 percent owned by Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts Inc., listed $1.3 billion in debt and $1.5 million in assets.

But this time around the Donald proposed that reorganizing the company would provide him the cash to upgrade his properties. By making these changes, he could help keep the casinos competitive. The second benefit: bondholders would receive stock in exchange for forgiving the debt owed. In other words, it would increase their ownership of the company by roughly two-thirds.

The chances of making the money back and even a bit of profit will dramatically increase when the casino emerges from the reorganization. Why? Well, vendors will be paid.

But best of all, Trump got to keep his job (and his rather hefty salary). If all goes as planned, Trump’s Atlantic City properties will be able to actually turn a profit and even potentially expand into new markets like Las Vegas.

At the end of the day, Donald Trump will not only come out on top, he may well come out in the green.

She is so damn lucky to inherit $2.3 billion (some tiny part of it)  from the grandpa Barron Hilton……. said to be in the will for around $100 million just for her. How about her parents? Could be more than that right?

Here is where the snag comes into play when talking about how much money Paris Hilton is worth. In 2007 Barron Hilton came out and made the announcement that he would be leaving 97% of his fortune to charity because he felt the money would be put to better use this way. Isn’t that the most awesome thing you’ve ever seen a major celebrity do with their money?

After this announcement it was said that the heiress seen her impending inheritance drop from $100 million down to anywhere between $2-5 million. I’m sure most Americans would love to have that kind of cash but with the way this woman spends money that likely would last a year or two at most.

Okay so we figured out that isn’t going to inherit nearly as much cash as everyone thought at on time. But it still doesn’t answer the question how much money is Paris Hilton worth? Well to be perfectly fair about the situation she has done a really great job of using her name to make a living all by herself over the years. She has clothing lines, perfumes, designer dog items and tons of other stuff out there on the market. I cannot confirm this but a couple rumors online state that she has been making around $30 million a year from her own products and appearing at signings and events.

Don’t follow those strategies. Warren Buffett advises that ‘broad diversification is used by people to protect themselves against their own ignorance.’ If you know what you are doing (high financial intelligence), you should concentrate your portfolio into equities (stocks & mutual funds) as they achieve the highest return. And you can achieve low risk not by simply spreading your money around, but by your competence of knowing which funds and stocks to pick.

So, the strategy I am going to share with you would be deemed highly risky by the general financial advisers and bankers. Again, it’s because most investors lack the competence to do otherwise. However, with the strategies and knowledge you are gaining in this book, you will prove to yourself that it is actually low risk, high return strategy.

You should take your monthly savings of 15-20% and allocate it to four money baskets. These are the security basket, growth basket, high growth basket and the luxury basket. Let me explain each of these.
1. Security Basket (Target Return of 1.5%-4.5%pa)
This is for your own security. If you suddenly lose your job, experience a salary cut or suffer a setback in your business, you know that you will have access to these funds anytime to see you through.
It should include cash, fixed deposits/certificates of deposits, personal housing, insurance & capital guaranteed funds.

2. Growth Basket 1 (Target Return of 8.51%-20%pa)
This is the basket where you build your net worth & positive cash flow assets that will lead you to financial freedom.

3. Growth Basket 2 (15%-25%)
This is the basket where you ACCELERATE the building of your net worth & positive cash flow assets that will lead you to financial freedom. Once again, you should not have to touch this money for five to ten years to let the power of compounding work its magic.

4. Luxury Basket (0%)
This basket is for you to enjoy such as dream house, luxury cars, jewelry, and other luxuries.

When Social Security starts paying out more than it takes in, whether it be 2012, 2015, or a few years later, the system will be running a deficit in real terms because the trust is virtual.   If you put $10,000 in the bank, take it all out for some home repair and maybe a few weekends in Vegas, that money is gone, IOU or no.   If you write an IOU to yourself to replace that ten-grand, and you stick to your word, you still have to come up with the money somewhere…that original 10k, again, is already gone.   The Social Security Ponzi Scheme thus was a not-so-elaborate method of shoveling trillions of dollars into the mouths of politicians and out onto their pet projects…original intention aside.

Where did those payroll taxes go?   Who knows?   Could be to Star Wars funding, Farm Subsidies, Tax Cuts, Tomahawk Missiles, appropriations within the infamous Black Budget…the possibilities are as vast and spooky as Karl Rove’s imagination. We are left with the government’s promise that the trust exists. Granted, if the government defaulted on a promise like this, there would be revolution in the streets and in the retirement towers. The people wouldn’t stand for it.   At best, if tens of millions of seniors and near-retirees feel shafted, and these folks tend to vote, our next batch of leaders will make Ted Kennedy look like an arch conservative, which would mean financial ruin in a permanent way.   Uncle Sam will, one way or another, make good on those trust fund promises until 2042, but he’ll either have to raise trillions in taxes or trillions in more debt to make it so.

At this point, we should all agree that there is a problem.   Yes?

There is no one solution for saving and strengthening Social Security.   Wise tinkering and incremental changes should be cobbled together for the effect we want, which again, is a stronger and safer public pensions system. Fixing Social Security requires a holistic approach, and both sides of the partisan isle will need to honestly address some tough questions, check their sacks, and then swallow some potentially bitter medicine.

Employers can save a maximum of $195,000 per year. But you need an actuary to determine the amount that can be contributed, which adds to the cost of the plan.

In contrast, the Solo-K, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs allow more flexibility by allowing employers to reduce contributions in a year with poor cash flow.

Due to their expense and complexity, defined benefit plans are slightly out of fashion. According to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., there are 38,000 defined benefit plans today compared to 114,000 in 1985. Despite their waning popularity, they can still be a good option for business owners who want to save the most money on a tax-deferred basis as possible.

• Who can open one: Any employer of any size.
• Cost and complexity: High.
• Employer contribution limit: Up to $195,000, but the actual amount is determined by a formula used to calculate the benefit an employee earns for retirement. An actuary determines the amount to be contributed to the plan.
• Employee contribution limit: Not applicable.
• Annual reporting requirements: Yes.

The Solo 401(k) allows business owners to put away more money than a SIMPLE or SEP IRA, and there is some flexibility when it comes to contributions. You can contribute more or less every year, but a maximum of $16,500 for 2009.

A profit sharing component can also be added to the Solo-K.

“Business owners can add the profit sharing part to maximize contributions to the plan. The employer can make a maximum tax-deductible contribution to the plan of up to 25 percent of compensation,” says Robby Schultz, a financial adviser with the CPA firm, Rollins and Associates.

• Who can open one: Self-employed business owners with no employees other than a spouse.
• Cost and complexity: Medium.
• Employer contribution limit: $16,500 of salary deferral plus 25 percent of compensation, or $49,000, whichever is less, if a profit sharing component is added to the plan.
• Employee contribution limit: Not applicable.
• Annual reporting requirements: Yes.

It is as easy and low cost to set up and maintain as the SIMPLE IRA. But instead of the employee making contributions to the plan with a match from the employer, the employer makes the entire contribution.

Self-employed workers may find the SEP ideal due to its low setup and maintenance costs. Business owners can save quite a bit more in a SEP than the SIMPLE or other IRAs. For 2009, the contribution limit is 25 percent of net income up to $49,000.

As an example, say you receive $5,000 for a product, but you spent $1,000 on supplies and Web advertising to make that sale.

That $1,000 subtracted from the $5,000 gives you $4,000 net. The net income is what your pension contribution is based on.

• Who can open one: Any employer or self-employed person.
• Cost and complexity: Low.
• Employer contribution limit: 25 percent of employees’ net income up to $49,000.
• Employee contribution limit: Not applicable.
• Annual reporting requirements: None.

The plans are designed for small businesses with no more than 100 employees who earned $5,000 or more on the payroll for the previous calendar year. But some advisers and tax professionals think these plans are more suited for much smaller companies.

It’s easy and simple. Including instructions, the account application is about four pages to fill out, and you can do it in 10 minutes.

• Who can open one: Generally an employer with no more than 100 employees.
• Cost and complexity: Low.
• Employer contribution limit: 3 percent of employees’ pay, matching, or 2 percent non elective.
• Employee contribution limit: $11,500 for 2009.
• Annual reporting requirements: None.

Next year will be the retirement year for Uncle John.   He’s been toiling in one Flint GM factory or another for 35-plus years, and he’s about done with it.   Work— tinkering with cars, boats, and home remodeling tasks— can still give him a charge, but crawling out of bed every weekday morning at 5 to slap together torque converters wears on him.   He’d rather spend time hunting and fishing, and also with his grand-kids.

John is pretty young for retirement.   He’s in excellent shape— SAY NO TO Alcohol and Cigarettes and he’s able to carry his 150lb outboard trolling motor down a flight of stairs into his basement every winter’s eve for storage.   He’s paid into the Social Security pensions system since he was a teenager, when payroll taxes were 6%.   Most of that money went straight to retirees drawing direct benefits at the time.   Today, payroll taxes are 12.4%, a partial reflection of a trust fund set up in 1983, so John’s kids and grand-kids, and nephews, wouldn’t have to worry about their Social Security later on.   Just like John isn’t one to worry.

“You get old in your head,” John says. “Age is different. That comes whether you think about it or not.”

John’s got a lot left in his tank, and his retirement should be a good one. He’ll draw from his GM pension upon retirement, then from an IRA when he’s 59.5 to compliment his GM pension.   Finally, at either 62 or 65, John will add Social Security as his third stream of income. As it happens, some company pension systems (like GM’s and Ford’s), and the Medicare system, are deeper into crisis than Social Security, though our government won’t speak on this.

So, maybe tackling Social Security’s existential issues first is a way of trying to fix the obviously fixable before grappling with some real monsters. It’s going to be challenging enough to keep a constant stipend stream flowing to a growing gaggle of seniors; God knows how much it’s going to cost to keep them all medicated properly. Thus no one knows how to fix Medicare right now without doubling taxes— and killing our economy. Like our leaders, I’ll leave that hornet’s nest for future treatment.

Folks like Uncle John symbolize why Social Security is facing a long-term solvency crisis. Baby Boomers, some seventy million of them, are healthier than their parents, and certainly healthier than their grandparents (being weaned off Spam, succotash, and filter-less Lucky Strikes surely helped). They could spend up to a third of their time on Earth collecting social security benefits. In Uncle John’s case, his retirement could last as long as his 35 years in the shop.

Unfortunately Boomers have not produced enough GenX’ers and PlayStation Babies. Boomers certainly lived up to their part of Social Security’s social contract by paying for the retirement of their forefathers. Yet while working hard to build a hyper-tech society, Boomers tended to keep their families small. Aside from the grief this demographic wedge causes a pay-as-you-go pension system, the reproduction drop makes a lot of sense. We don’t need hordes of large families to mind the farm. Children today are expected to move from birth through high school graduation without getting whacked by the measles or polio. Furthermore, the costs associated with raising children to where they’ll compete successfully in modern society have skyrocketed.

An 8th grade education and a strong back won’t cut it anymore. Reactionary conservatives look at the demographic crunch and point to issues of selfishness– the popularity of the Pill, and the fact that maybe disco dancing till 4 in the morning was more fun than wiping up baby vomit. In fact there are too many factors to list for the population decline of Western Society. Trying to weigh each one properly is futile. What we know for sure is that, in 1960, there were 5 workers for every retiree. Today it’s ~3.4 to 1. In 2030, given generous immigration quotas, the ratio will be ~2.2 workers per one retiree.

By assuming those generous immigrant inflows, it’s important to remember that new Americans typically make less than the 7 th generation WASP, and thus contribute less in payroll taxes…so we can’t go there for the panacea. I should add that manufacturing a homegrown population explosion to increase the worker-to-retiree ratio is off the table. Mom earth doesn’t need to be made angrier, and anyone who suggests otherwise needs to be dragged off in manacles to the nearest inpatient rehab facility.

So, more old people, drawing benefits and living longer, against fewer working people, equals financial rupture for a pay-as-you-go trust system. No serious person can dispute this, not to dismiss the metric tons of seriousness people milling about, but monolithic cultures are boring, and all I seek is a solid consensus.

Today, she couldn’t buy a toy truck. The combination of a weak economy, which forced her to close her private counseling practice and caused her husband to lose a lucrative contract, has taken her family from a six-figure income to barely any income at all. To add to the constant barrage of debt collectors calling them, her husband hasn’t been able to obtain a job. “He’s only gotten two interviews and one offer,” says Brooke, who lives in the Dallas area with her husband. “But when they ran our credit, they told him they couldn’t hire him.”

The current financial crisis has brought about many economic anomalies, including throwing a whole new subset of the population on the radar of debt collectors – upper-middle class and affluent consumers like Brooke.

No more easy street

“We are seeing people who’ve never been down this road before” says Phill Hudson, a partner for the law firm of Arnstein & Lehr, with offices in Chicago, Ill., Milwaukee, WI., and throughout Florida. “Most people in this situation haven’t focused on what they’re facing, and the first thing we tell them is don’t ignore it and don’t become paralyzed.”

“Most people are in shock and they’re entering a world they’ve never dreamt of,” says Robert Markoff, president of the National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys, based in Washington, D.C. “The first thing consumers must do is talk to whoever is calling you.” Financial experts agree that speaking to debt collectors, especially in the early stages of delinquency, can go a long way in assisting a consumer’s cause.

According to Cena Valladolid, chief operating officer with Consumer Credit Counseling of Southern Nevada (CCCS), a non-profit organization that offers budget education, debt counseling, and elimination programs to consumers, talking to creditors can afford you an opportunity to become educated on special programs and repayment terms.

Part of honestly assessing your situation is looking at your assets that possibly can be sold such as a vacation home, timeshares, recreational vehicle, or non-essential vehicle. Also examine your savings, says Brooke. While she didn’t have anything with equity to sell, she used what small savings she had to settle three loans with a bank willing to work with what she could offer.

Don’t panic

Perhaps just as bad as ignoring debt is getting into further trouble when trying to eliminate it. Sending all of your money to one creditor won’t make your problems go away, and can get you in deeper with other lenders. “People have a tendency to send the creditor who is making the most noise all of their money,” says Hudson, “but consumers need to make arrangements with all of their creditors.”

The priorities start with the essentials first, says Markoff. “It’s clear that you will need to provide shelter and food for yourself and your family,” says Markoff. “If you don’t have anything left, then you cannot work out plans.”

Markoff also advises consumers against falling into the trap of believing that if a payment plan cannot be worked out, an unsecured creditor can take their home or other property. “Generally, we don’t usually see a company taking property,” he says. If the problem seems overwhelming, he says, law firms that specialize in debt management and bankruptcy may be able to help consumers work with creditors.

“We eventually act as more than lawyers,” says Hudson of the services his firm offers. “We know the banks and lenders and the ins and outs of what they’re doing and accepting,” says Hudson. “Our clients may not always be happy about the options, but if we can get past the initial hurdle, we can help them move forward.”

Seek extra help

In addition to seeking paid counsel, there are also non-profit financial counseling alternatives. Services such as those offered by CCCS provide assistance with setting up budgets to accommodate precarious financial positions, and negotiating with creditors.

“Many creditors will reduce or eliminate penalties and interest,” says Valladolid. “We h ope to put people in a situation to eventually help maintain or rebuild their credit.”

But, debtor beware. Valladolid cautions against companies that promise to help you immediately increase your credit score or rebuild your credit, or companies that offer to settle debts for very low amounts. “Anytime there is a public financial crisis with long-stretching arms, it always leaves room for scams,” says Valladolid. “I’ve heard of companies say they can eliminate debts up to 80 percent and settle them… we’ve never seen that here at CCCS.”

Additionally, Valladolid says legitimate non-profit credit counseling agencies will not charge a fee for their services. “We don’t charge because there’s nothing we do that the consumer cannot do for themselves for free, including negotiating settlements,” he says.

Markoff also cautions against companies that ask for fees in return for negotiating payment arrangements and settlements. “I see consumers daily who come to me saying they’ve sent all of their money to a company, and when they get sued they realize the company didn’t help them,” says Markoff.

When should bankruptcy be considered?

Before you consider bankruptcy as an option, speak with an attorney or credit counselor, says Markoff, as it might give you a different perspective. “If there’s a judgment entered, it doesn’t mean a person needs to file bankruptcy,” says Markoff. “It’s a black market on the credit, but the credit reports are already not looking good.”

Chatz says speaking to an expert in bankruptcy is a must. “There are different types of bankruptcy that are best for different people,” he explains. “And people need to realize that you cannot file bankruptcy on government debts such as IRS debts or student loans, as well as on child support debt.”

Markoff says if a bankruptcy isn’t right for you, more often than not, creditors will usually just sit on a judgment until the consumer’s situation improves, at which time, the consumer can then make arrangements for payments or settle the account.

“The most important thing to do is to not panic and focus on the future,” says Chatz. “Accept it and work through it. Things will turn around, they always do.”

For Brooke, she and her husband are still both seeking employment, as well as trying to take destiny into their own hands by starting another business. “We are launching an Internet business that uses his technical skill and the model I developed as a counselor and an author, but who knows how long that will take to go to fruition,” says Brooke. In the meantime, they move forward with credit lessons learned

Individual banking institutions have their own policies when it comes to credit card applications. Customers may seek either a secured or unsecured credit card, depending on their individual repayment histories (credit rating). A secured credit card requires the applicant to deposit an amount of cash equivalent to the credit limit desired. A deposit of $1500 USD, for example, should be enough to be issued a credit card with a $1000 to $1500 spending limit. If the customer fails to make sufficient payments, the deposited money will be used to satisfy the credit card debt.

An unsecured credit card, on the other hand, is generally issued to those who have a good credit history and have demonstrated an ability to repay the accrued debt on time. Credit limits are determined on an individual basis, and may be raised or lowered based on performance. An unsecured credit card is essentially a pre-approved loan, with interest rates higher than a similar personal bank loan. The main benefit of any credit card is instant access to more cash than you may have on hand. A recent college graduate, for example, may have to purchase a business suit for employment purposes. Earning the $200+ USD needed for an average suit could take weeks, and he or she needs the suit in order to earn the income. Putting the suit on a credit card would be the ideal solution; the borrower could repay the balance with his or her first paycheck and few interest charges would accrue.

Credit card use often becomes problematic when the holder accrues more debt than a regular monthly payment can cover. The issuing bank does allow credit card users to carry over balances every month (revolving credit), but significant interest rates may also accrue on those balances. Missing a scheduled payment can also prompt the bank to raise interest rates on a delinquent account. If a credit card holder can only afford to pay the minimal amount due every month, he or she will not be reducing the actual debt incurred. The minimal payments may only apply to the accrued interest. This is a financial spiral many credit card users may experience if they don’t use proper spending restraint.

A credit card does give the holder an immediate credibility for services such as hotel reservations, car rentals and airline ticket reservations. Those without a credit card often have to guarantee their reservations with cash deposits or several forms of identification. Many credit card plans also include insurance coverage for theft or fraud. If a credit card is reported stolen and then used illegally, the cardholder would not be held responsible for unauthorized charges. A credit card holder can authorize other people to use the card for purchases or services, however. Ultimately, the primary cardholder is responsible for all charges placed on his or her account.

While on the surface an investment loan and a mortgage seem the same, in reality they are two completely different types of funding.

It’s true that credit cards have become important sources of identification — if you want to rent a car, for example, you really need a major credit card. And used wisely, a credit card can provide convenience and allow you to make purchases with nearly a month to pay for them before finance charges kick in.

That sounds good, in theory. But in reality, many consumers are unable to take advantage of these benefits because they carry a balance on their credit card from month to month, paying finance charges that can go up to a whopping 23 percent. Many find it hard to resist using the old “plastic” for impulse purchases or buying things they really can’t afford. The numbers are striking: In 1999, American consumers charged about $1.2 trillion on their general-purpose credit cards.

In this article we’ll look at the credit card — how it works both financially and technically and we’ll offer tips on how to shop for a credit card. Let’s start at the beginning. A credit card is a thin plastic card, usually 3-1/8 inches by 2-1/8 inches in size, that contains identification information such as a signature or picture, and authorizes the person named on it to charge purchases or services to his account — charges for which he will be billed periodically. Today, the information on the card is read by automated teller machines (ATMs), store readers, and bank and Internet computers.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the use of credit cards originated in the United States during the 1920s, when individual companies, such as hotel chains and oil companies, began issuing them to customers for purchases made at those businesses. This use increased significantly after World War II.

­The first universal credit card — one that could be used at a variety of stores and businesses — was introduced by Diners Club, Inc., in 1950. With this system, the credit-card company charged cardholders an annual fee and billed them on a monthly or yearly basis. Another major universal card — “Don’t leave home without it!” — was established in 1958 by the American Express company.

Later came the bank credit-card system. Under this plan, the bank credits the account of the merchant as sales slips are received (this means merchants are paid quickly — something they love!) and assembles charges to be billed to the cardholder at the end of the billing period. The cardholder, in turn, pays the bank either the entire balance or in monthly installments with interest (sometimes called carrying charges).

The first national bank plan was Bank Americard, which was started on a statewide basis in 1959 by the Bank of America in California. This system was licensed in other states starting in 1966, and was renamed Visa in 1976.

Other major bank cards followed, including MasterCard, formerly Master Charge. In order to offer expanded services, such as meals and lodging, many smaller banks that earlier offered credit cards on a local or regional basis formed relationships with large national or international banks.

Business doesn’t happen until goods or services exchange hands and money of some kind is offered in return. This is the basic cash flow process. A service is offered and a monetary exchange is enacted to secure the transaction. If this process isn’t completed, then no business can function properly and progress in the business world would stop. Many businesses put more stress on profits than on cash flow and this is one of the biggest reasons that new businesses fail. It doesn’t matter how much profit you make on a sale or shipping a crate of your products if there isn’t any kind of money flowing through the system.

Many business owners are unrealistic about their expectations for cash flow in any given period of time and overestimate income while underestimating expenses. Income and expenses are both very important factors in the cash flow question and determine how much money is really being made by a business. A company can run into serious trouble when they just have more money flowing out of the business than flowing into it.

Understanding this basic concept can make it much easier to understand how to fix the problem. Profit is really defined as the difference between income and expenses and cash flow is the difference between incoming and outgoing cash. Another reason that many small businesses fail is that they don’t anticipate cash flows correctly and simply find one day that they don’t have enough money to pay the bills and then have to just stop operations. This is what kills the business and makes it impossible to continue.

Calculating cash flow is a very important part of the accounting process and should be calculated monthly. This can vary for different businesses depending on how cash intensive they are and how strict creditors are on payment terms. Most business accounts allow for 30 days to receive payment after a service or good has been provided.

Projecting cash flow doesn’t have to be rocket science if approached correctly. You should first start with how much cash is actually on hand in the business. This is what is in the bank account for the business and what actual currency you have at a place of business. When you know what amount of cash you have on hand, then you should make a list of all the expected outflows or expenses you will have for the next month. This is something that you may have to guess on, but you can probably get pretty close if you spend enough time thinking about it.

You then should make a list of all expected inflows of cash like customer payments, collection of debts and any interest or investment earning. It’s important to consider the amount of the inflow and also when it will occur. The timing can be a very important factor. When you have all of this information gathered together, put it all in a spreadsheet or financial program in chronological order. If there is ever a point where you see a negative cash flow in the business, there is a problem that needs to be addressed or you will likely have some serious problems down the road. Many people neglect to go through this process and so don’t realize that cash flow is an issue until it’s too late. Make sure that you aren’t a victim.
